Ashley Williams ESSAY:

The Erie Canal is a canal in New York state from the Hudson River to Lake Erie, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in 1825. The Canal created the first great westward movement of American settlers, gave access to the rich land and resources west of the Appalachians and made New York the preeminent commercial city in the United States. The Erie Canal made an huge contribution to the wealth and importance of New York City, Buffalo, and New York State. Its effect went further, increasing trade throughout the nation by opening eastern and overseas markets to Midwestern farm products and made it possible to migrate to the West.

New ethnic Irish communities formed in some towns along its route after completion, as Irish immigrants were a big portion of labor force involved in its construction. The Erie Canal was considered innovative because it provided a new way for people to travel, trade and interact with each other. When the Erie Canal was completed, population, trade and settlement in America increased. The population increased because the canal provided a pathway for people of different cultures to interact with other people, this is also known as cultural diffusion.

The trade increased because the canal itself was a trade route. The delivery of goods was faster than before. The Erie Canal brought in a lot of money to America once it was completed. "In their annual report of 1825, the canal commissioners noted that nearly $300,000 in tolls had been recieved in 1824 and Clinton wrote to John Jacob Astor that they would reach $600,000 for 1825." (ERIE WATER 192) The Erie Canal had tolls to generate revenue for the state.

The Erie Canal was important to all New Yorkers because it made it possible for information to get to them faster and they could recieve the things they needed faster too. "Usually a typical message would take weeks or months to move across the state but not this day." (http://www.bignerds.com/essays/Erie-Canal/855.html) When the canal was first opened, there was a big celebration in New York. New Yorkers had put so much effort and hard work into helping build the canal. Some people were paid min. wage for such a big job.

The Erie Canal is considered to be the most innoviate artifical water way made. It has helped improved New York in many ways.
